News Anchor Sharon Tazewell

The sounds of Reggae, Calypso, steel pan music and the smells of a pot of curry chicken or "stew" pork are reminiscent of Sharon’s early childhood years in the West Indies. Sharon was born in Antigua and Barbuda and is a proud Antiguan. However, her mother is from Trinidad and Tobago and those Trini roots run deep. Her childhood, a fusion between the two countries.
While in Antigua, her American father, a minister, also took up politics. He had a radio broadcast called Sharon Gospel Hour, reaching several West Indian islands, plus South America. The first time Sharon spoke into a microphone and was heard over the airwaves, was at the age of three. It was magical. The seed was planted.
Sharon, her parents and two older brothers relocated to South Dakota. That’s where she attended elementary school. While living in the Midwest, her father ran for office and served two terms in the House of Representatives. It was common for Sharon to sit on the House floor, have tea at the Governor’s mansion or dinners and outings with senators. She was awe struck and fascinated by the reporters and would count how many times she’d appear on the 6 o'clock news. Little did she know, she’d one day join them.

When she was 8-years-old, Sharon started her own pretend broadcast call SRM Family news. She’d interview her family members using a cassette recorder.  Sharon wrote about every and anything. What she didn’t realize is that she wrote like a journalist, even using quotes.
Her family relocated to Canada. In middle school, Sharon took a journalism class earning a 110%. That’s when she received her first Journalism Award. Her teacher suggested she become a TV journalist, but despite her experiences at the capitol, it seemed farfetched.
Always the editor of her school newspaper, she decided to pursue a college degree in Journalism. During her freshman year at Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia, she was a DJ at the campus radio station, wrote for the school paper, and ran track.
Also, her freshman year, Sharon completed her first TV internship at WEHT. She had the fever, the TV fever. She was hooked. Writing, voice and video. There was no looking back. In-between classes and track, she worked as a production assistant. Then, the summer after her sophomore year, she moved to Washington, D.C. for a paid internship with Eye to Eye with Connie Chung. She split her time between Eye to Eye and the CBS Newsroom.
She transferred to Kent State University and majored in Journalism and Mass Communications with a concentration in Broadcast News. While there she also anchored the LIVE student run TV2 newscasts and completed three more internships, and received several more awards.
Fast forward to today. Sharon is an accomplished, award-winning anchor and reporter, a wife and mother of four wonderful children. They love to travel the world and experience new adventures. They often volunteer at local non-profits. Sharon loves to cook (yes, West Indian food), play the piano, sing and perform with local theatre groups.
That seed planted during her first radio experience at the age of 3 on the tiny island of Antigua, has been watered and nurtured. Sharon’s career is in full bloom. They currently live in Raleigh, NC and are so excited about their next move.
